Diarrhea is a major cause of childhood deaths in Rural Africa, with dirt floors and unhealthy homes being a significant contributor to the spread of parasites, bacteria, and pathogens. However, healthy floors can reduce the incidence of childhood diarrhea and parasitic infections by 49% and 78%, respectively. In addition, a home environment without dirt floors has been shown to significantly reduce the risks of diarrhea, malnutrition, asthma, and pneumonia.

A healthy EarthEnable floor is 80% cheaper than a concrete floor, making it a more affordable option for rural Africa. Concrete is too expensive for many families, which makes it a difficult purchase decision when compared to buying food. EarthEnable through it’s Research and Development Team, is working to building a wholistic health and affordable home for Africa.

EarthEnable is committed to providing a long-term income generating solution in rural Africa by training locals as masons that create and install sustainable housing product. The masons become entrepreneurs and generate income using their new skills.

EarthEnable prioritizes creating a healthy and environmentally-friendly homes for rural Africa. We use natural materials and green building techniques to minimize their carbon footprint. Earthen floors have 90% less embedded energy than cement and are durable, waterproof, and abrasion-resistant. The organization’s mission is to promote more sustainable building practices in the developing world and move away from relying on concrete, as there are many other environmentally sustainable building materials available.

The Challenge

+1.6 billion people globally live in homes with dirt floors and mud structures.

Parasites thrive in dirt floors causing diarrhea and anemia, leading to poor cognitive development, malnutrition, and death.

Concrete is not affordable or sustainable yet it is the leading construction material globally.

Why hasn’t rural housing been disrupted?

The development of rural housing products is not commercially viable given that the rural poor have low purchasing power

EarthEnable’s in-house Design Lab combines local traditional knowledge with advanced material science and engineering to create high quality, healthy products for the base of the pyramid.

The rural supply chain is broken and inefficient because transporting materials is logistically difficult and expensive with rural infrastructure.

EarthEnable optimizes the supply chain by sourcing hyper- local, earth-based materials for floors, blocks, and plaster.

There is no reliable workforce of quality masons and no opportunities for local people to gain these marketable skills.

EarthEnable trains and certifies masons and the endorsement of our trusted brand gives customers confidence in their skills.

Housing products made from natural materials are currently unregulated without common quality standards.

EarthEnable works with governments to support policy, develop standards on local building materials, and generate a body of evidence on their many benefits.
